About me
Greetings! My name is Beba Cibralic (pronounced beh-bah tsi-bra-lich). I hail from Liverpool, Australia (where I grew up) and Sanski Most, Bosnia (where I was born).
I'm a philosopher and researcher working on AI. I'm currently a professor at the RAND School of Public Policy, a research scientist at RAND working on AI governance, ethics, and safety, and an Associate Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at Cambridge University. I am the co-author of Machine Agency (MIT Press, 2025, with James Mattingly).
I have worked on AI ethics in industry, as Responsible AI Lead at JPMorgan Chase & Co, and have contributed to AI policy projects with the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) and the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET).
I received my PhD in philosophy from Georgetown University, my MA in China Studies from Peking University, where I studied as a Yenching Scholar, and my undergraduate degree in philosophy and political science from Wellesley College. I was a visiting undergraduate student at Oxford and a visiting PhD student at Cambridge.
